This coin is the last and most distinct of the Half Eagle series. Issued in 1908, its unique design is engraved into the coin rather than sculpted onto the coin’s surface. This collection is graded “very fine” (VF) with 90.0% purity and size of .2418 troy oz making it an attractive medium-sized investment.
The distinguishing characteristic of the Gold Half Eagle is its portrait of a Native American chief. Thirteen stars divided by the word “Liberty” and the year of mintage frame the proud warrior. Bela Lyon Platt designed the artwork in honor and celebration of America’s national identity to which the Native American icon comprised a significant and symbolic part.
On the coin’s reverse side, you’ll find the image of a bald eagle atop an olive branch and arrows. The coin’s denomination is also written out completely, a slight diversion from the abbreviations and numerical figures that you may find in other coin series.
