The Complete List Of Failed Banks Over The Last 10 Years - Who's Next?

Bank Dividend
Print Friendly, PDF & Email

We published our Bank Failure Survival Guide for one simple reason: banks fail every year. And as our economy enters the downward phase of a business cycle (all economies are cyclical), we can expect to see more banks fail at an accelerating rate.

Many of the banks that collapsed over the decade are regional banks. These are your small local banks, where ma and pa stores deposit their money, where your small local businesses get their loans, and where your neighbors deposit and/or borrow funds.

It doesn’t matter whether regional bank failures make national headlines. Often they don’t. The risk and the negative impact that bank failures have on depositors can be devastating. It also says a lot about the competence or moral position of the bankers themselves.

If a bank fails, the depositors take all of the risks. The executives who ran the bank into the ground likely don’t. And for the execs who got fired before running their bank into the ground, chances are that they went home with compensation before finding work at another bank.

But how bad has it been, and how much worse can it get? We can’t predict the future. But we can look to the past to see the trajectory of bank failures across different phases of the economic cycle.

Below is a list of bank failures we’ve seen over the last decade. Their total cost (in parenthesis) to the FDIC has been included in situations wherein such data is publicly available. The list starts at the beginning of our current bull market, March 2009, and ends in December 2019.*

It’s a huge list. So, before we begin, here’s the big picture:

486 US banks have failed over the last decade.

That comes out to 48.6 bank failures per year…

4 bank failures per month.

The good news is that fewer banks have been failing since 2009.

The caveat is that the US has been experiencing a massive bull market and major economic growth since 2009.

So, what might happen to regional banks when the US enters a bear market or recession?
