College Station is a friendly community in the heart of the Brazos Valley, a region in East Central Texas. It takes its name from the numerous educational campuses, including the main campus of Texas A&M University and the Texas A&M Health Science Center, which call College Station home. These facilities have helped make College Station the most educated city in Texas according to “Money” magazine.
College Station was merely vacant land when the Houston and Texas Central Railway passed through in 1860. However, developers soon realized its potential, and it was proposed as the site of the new Agricultural and Mechanic College of Texas 11 years later. When it opened its doors in 1876, it was the first public higher education facility in Texas.
College Station’s population grew slowly, with just 391 people living there at the turn of the 20th century. By 1940, its population had reached 2,184. College Station flourished under the leadership of Mayor Ernest Langford, who oversaw the city for 26 years from 1942. It had more than 11,300 non-student residents by the end of Mayor Langford’s tenure. By the year 2000, 67,890 non-students lived in College Station.
