Topeka, the capital of Kansas, lies along the Kansas River in the northeast portion of the state. The town first served as a ferry stop assisting Oregon Trail travelers crossing the Kansas River. Later, it became a steamboat stop, as Topeka grew into a commercial hub by the 1860s.
